The reason for the discussion is that the league believed that Marek was feeding insider information to former NHL scout Mark Seidel. During the 2024 Draft, Seidel was consistently selecting the correct decisions for several teams, and while analysts can be correct; this level of consistency was deemed suspicious.
The Athletic reached out to Seidel as well as a former colleague and Marek's ex-32 Thoughts partner Elliotte Friedman, however, they have not received a statement from either side, which is to be expected. Sportsnet felt like their hands were tied and releasing Marek was considered damage control, and felt like a panic move.
