Former NHLer Chara completes first Ironman marathon; swapping skates for shoes

But now, the 47-year old is becoming an intimidating presence that could lead to a new nickname: Ironman. Recently, a post on X shows Chara biking after completing his first ever full length Ironman challenge.

An Ironman challenge is an athletic gauntlet that is essentially a juiced up triathlon. It consists of a 3.9km swim, an absurd 180.2km bike ride, followed up with the traditional marathon of 42.2km. Chara spends roughly 18-20 hours a week prepping for the competition, but for an athlete like Chara that's easy business, though he appreciates the dedication and hard work put in to these events.

Chara also has competed in two Boston Marathons, fitting for the defenseman who spent the better of 14 years as a member of the Boston Bruins, and clearly still has a deep admiration for the city and its fans.

It remains to be seen how Chara finishes after he suits up for the World Championships in Kona, Hawaii but one thing is for certain: everyone in the league is thankful he's not terrorizing their teams anymore.
