In a move that caught both fans and experts off guard, the Toronto Maple Leafs made a bold decision to draft a 147-pound defenseman at the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, selecting Victor Johansson in the fourth round.

Johansson, a relatively unknown defenseman from Sweden, was not on most scouting radars, which made his selection by Leafs' executives Wes Clark and Brad Treliving a significant surprise.
The Leafs' choice to draft Johanssona left-shot defensemanreflects their strategy of focusing on long-term development projects. Despite being unranked by many scouting services, the Toronto management saw potential in Johansson that they were willing to bet on. At the Leafs' development camp, Johansson himself expressed his astonishment at the pick.
"I didn't expect them to draft me, but I knew there was a chance they were drafting me. I didn't know that I was going to go fourth round. I didn't have that on my mind," said Johansson before revealing he wasn't expecting to be drafted. "Not at all or seventh round."

Standing at 6'1 and officially listed at 143 pounds by Elite Prospects, Johansson admits he is closer to 147 pounds. Despite his slight frame, he is committed to gaining the necessary mass to compete in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies and hopefully, eventually, with the Leafs.
"I need to grow a little bit in my body... but it's nice they're believing in me."

Development and Future Prospects
As development camp nears its conclusion, Johansson will return to Sweden with access to the Leafs' developmental resourcesa significant advantage as he aims to strengthen his physical condition and skills. His journey reflects the Leafs' willingness to nurture and develop players who may initially seem like unconventional choices. This strategy emphasizes the organization's confidence in their development system and their readiness to invest in potential rather than just established talent.
This unexpected draft pick will be interesting to follow as Johansson continues to develop, potentially proving the Leafs' gamble right and showcasing the depth of their scouting and development efforts.
