Toronto misses out on adding former 6th overall pick for insurance depth; signs in Europe

Well, it's more of the same for the Maple Leafs as they botched an opportunity to sign the former 6th overall pick as Zadina decided to abandon the NHL altogether and sign with European club HC Davos; an announcement made by the team in a bit of a tongue-in-cheek reference to NHL Insider Kevin Weekes:

Last week we reported that the Maple Leafs were one of the teams that Zadina and his agent Darren Ferris decided on; however spurring the whole league for a Swiss team wasn't on anyone's bingo card.

With Nick Robertson unable to decide what he wants to do, and a host of unproven rookies hopeful for a spot; it would have been a big boost to the bottom six for scoring, something Toronto desperately needs. Zadina had 13 goals last season and is still only 24 years old; a player a few years removed from his prime.

HC Davos is currently home to former NHLers Adam Tambellini, Joakim Nordstrom, Julius Honka, Klas Dahlbeck and now Zadina. However, names such as Joe Thornton, Rick Nash, Patrick Kane, Jonas Hoglund, Niklas Hagman, Loui Eriksson, and former #1 overall pick Alexandre Daigle have all played for the Swiss team at one point in their careers. Former Maple Leafs head coach Ron Wilson also played several years for Davos, and currently sits 2nd all-time in points.

HC Davos is most memorable for hosting the Spengler Cup every year, and often finds themselves in the mix to win the whole thing each tournament, having won the Spengler Cup 16 times, and being a runner up 25 times; proving their elite ability as one of the top clubs in Europe.
