It looks like the Toronto Marlies are going to have new neighbours this season as the Toronto PWHL team is going to be playing their games at Coca-Cola Coliseum.

The PWHL, a league formed last January, was created after the collapse of the CWHL leading to the PWHLPA; a contingent that promoted more stability and equality in women's professional hockey. The league is run by Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner and chairman Mark Walter through his purchase of assets from the PHF and alongside tennis legend Billie Jean King; created one singular league for women's professional hockey in North America.
The PWHL Toronto team used to host their games mainly at Mattamy Athletic Centre; the former home of the Maple Leafs as it used to be the ol' Maple Leaf Gardens. The team became incredibly popular, and with fans making sure a sell out happened every home game, they needed and wanted something bigger. They ended up playing the playoffs at the Coca-Cola Coliseum which pleased fans and gave the team a more professional feel.
Gina Kingsbury, General Manager for the Toronto squad and a 2-time Olympic Gold medalist had nothing but emphatic excitement for the upcoming season.
"«We are excited to be calling Coca-Cola Coliseum our home for the upcoming season,» said Gina Kingsbury, General Manager of PWHL Toronto. «We look forward to creating an atmosphere that will be a unique and special sporting experience unlike anything else in Toronto. Our incredible fans sold out this historic venue during our playoff games last season and now we can't wait to see and hear their infectious excitement again when we hit the ice for the 2024-2025 season.»
The team's shift to the bigger arena didn't stop the fans from pouring in, as the team sold out all three of their postseason games before being eliminated by eventual champions Minnesota. It seems like the PWHL Toronto team and fans aren't the only ones excited about the announcement, as MLSE COO Mike Eaves is equally thrilled.
"MLSE is very pleased to be able to help PWHL Toronto build on the success of their inaugural season with this move to this energetic and historic venue. We look forward to the team, and its fans, enjoying many incredible nights at Coca-Cola Coliseum this season and supporting the continued growth of the PWHL in any way we can.»
Though they call the Coliseum home for this season, they won't exclusively play every game there, as they look to play again at Scotiabank Arena as they did last February, and an expanded season means more opportunities to explore different venues for neutral game sites, much like last year where the league's teams didn't play exclusively at one arena the entire season.
The schedule isn't released as of yet, but you can bet the excitement and anticipation for the new season runs through fans and players alike.
