Toronto could pounce on Edmonton defenseman due to offer sheet drama

Edmonton currently has run into a bit of a kerfuffle due to St. Louis sliding in and offering offer sheets to two Oilers RFA's and are scrambling to find a solution which is as painless as possible. The Blues are trying to pry away Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg away from Edmonton in an effort to fast-track their on the go rebuild. Edmonton doesn't want to lose these prospects for nothing, and with how Blues GM Doug Armstrong structured the deals, it handicaps Edmonton by giving them the minimal amount as compensation.

It looks like Toronto could capitalize on this situation and shore up their defense by trying to swing a trade for either Brett Kulak or former Maple Leaf Cody Ceci. Per Oilers Access on X:

Ceci, a 6'3 210 pound defenseman would provide yet another big body for Toronto, and fill the void left by the unsurety of Jani Hakanpaa's contract. Not known for his offensive prowess, he's registered 48 goals and 163 assists in 786 games playing for Toronto, Edmonton, Pittsburgh and Ottawa who drafted him 15th overall in 2012.

Kulak, a 6'2 192 pound defenseman is slightly smaller than Ceci but still provides a deep understanding of positioning, has great defensive IQ and can chip in on the scoresheet from time to time. He's recorded 21 goals and 79 assists in 498 games playing for Edmonton, Montreal and Calgary who drafted him 105th overall in 2012 as well.

Both men would be a solid addition to a Maple Leafs lineup still figuring out the final pieces of their roster before the season starts; and perhaps reuniting with their former D-man can be the piece to the puzzle Toronto desperately needs.
