Nick Barden of The Hockey News has taken it upon himself to rank the Top 10 Maple Leafs prospects going into the 2024-25 season.

The Maple Leafs haven't had the strongest drafts, and though they have seemed to load up on prospective goaltenders and defenseman (more on that later), they have lacked that big elite name coming through the ranks; although they may not be far off with the #1 pick.
10. Nicholas Moldenhauer - C/RW
9. Artur Akhtyamov - G
8. Noah Chadwick - LHD
7. Roni Hirvonen - C/LW
6. Nikita Grebyonkin - LW/RW
5. Ben Danford - RHD
4. Dennis Hildeby - G
3. Topi Niemela - RHD
2. Fraser Minten - C
1. Easton Cowan - C/LW
Right off the bat, picks #1 and #2 obviously stand out as outliers compared to the others; Cowan put up a ridiculous 96 points in 54 games for the London Knights last season en route to a slew of accomplishments. Minten, who made the team out of camp last year also put together a solid season split between Kamloops and Saskatoon, with 48 points in 43 games with both teams.
Rounding out the Top 5 are Niemala, the first defenseman on the list and someone who could genuinely make a push for a roster spot should he have a breakout first half, or if any injuries occur to the D-Corps; Hildeby, a Swedish netminder at 6'7 projects to be a big part of the Maple Leafs in the future and can only grow from here. Finally, we have the newest prospect Ben Danford, who was drafted 31st overall in the 2024 Entry Draft. He's got great IQ and defensive metrics and will be a shutdown defenseman for the Leafs in due time.
Rounding out the list are Grebyonkin, who put together a solid season in the KHL and looks to ride that into this season for the Marlies. Hirvonen, who recently spoke about how his career nearly ended looks to come back at full strength, and put together a solid showing with 13 points in over 30 games after returning from injury.
Chadwick is a sneaky prospect coming in 8th as he was drafted #185th in the 2023 Draft and has already shot up into the Top 10; he's a big bodied defenseman who has great positioning and rarely gets flustered. Akhtyamov is a wildcard pick, as although he's a bit undersized for a goalie, he's tenacious and doesn't mind getting rough and gritty if it calls for it. His positioning is fantastic and with his propensity to dive and poke at a puck; could feel like a modern day Hasek at some points. Finally Moldenhauer finishes up at #10; and the Michigan product is looking to have a breakout year as he gets some more playing time due to the Rutger McGroarty trade and it will have to be a big year for Moldenhauer to ascend Barden's rankings.
