Amirov was drafted by Toronto in 2020 (15th overall) and looked to be a huge future player for the Maple Leafs, not only contributing on the scoresheet but being an intimidating presence on the ice. Unfortunately, fate had other terrible plans.
Amirov was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2022 and underwent chemotherapy in Toronto, and in a beautiful sign of respect the Leafs made him an honorary member of the team for their season opener. He would continue to receive treatment until the cancer was too far along (also reaching his optic nerve, leaving him blind) and passed away in 2023.
It's a tragic case of a life taken too soon, and the missed potential of a career, a family, and a legacy. Rest easy Rodion, we will never forget you.
