While a member of the Dallas Stars, Barnaby watched as the team handed the captaincy over to Brendan Morrow, shifting a change from long-time Stars legend Mike Modano; one of the greatest American scorers in history (ring a bell?). He saw that while visually the change was there, behind the scenes it was anything but.
Clearly, Barnaby is supportive of Matthews' captaincy choice, however he feels that the 'C' is more or less just a symbol on a jersey as opposed to doing much else. It seemed to be Matthews' team since he stepped onto the ice, and to Barnaby; a jersey swap won't do much.
Barnaby isn't the only NHLer to feel this way, as Aaron Korolnek and former Maple Leaf defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo spoke on TSN 1050's First Up about their thoughts on the situation and how they too think not much will change.
While not much might change in the locker room, the passing of the torch signals that not only is Toronto going to instill faith into their superstar for the foreseeable future, but a change in mentality where it's time to believe.
