When Toronto acquired Nick Foligno in 2021, he was supposed to serve as a offensive production piece while offering veteran leadership.

But injuries derailed that, and the former Columbus Blue Jackets captain opened up recently about the cause of the injury and how it was essentially a freak accident. On Dropping The Gloves, a podcast hosted by former enforcer and All-Star John Scott, Foligno divulged how a simple hockey play turned into something debilitating that cost him nearly an entire year.
"I don't know if it was the plane or what, but my back just was tight that night. And I went to stop in front of the net and I have no idea why, but for whatever reason. Boom. Everything just locked up. I was completely stuck."
What seems like a simple hockey play just happened to have gone wrong at the wrong time, something we see unfortunately all too often in professional sports. The injury seemed to have been caused by some discomfort during transportation from Winnipeg to Montreal and exacerbated itself during the game. This was the ultimate downfall as Foligno only ended up appearing in 7 games and registered 4 assists, and missed most of the 1st round series against Montreal.
