With both John Tavares and Mitch Marner's contracts expiring at season's end, speculation about their future in Toronto has run rampant and one insider believes he has the answer.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have not found much success with their Core 4 in the playoffs, often scurrying out of the first round after what sometimes feels like non-existent hockey. With many expecting a big change to happen this season, much has stayed the same in terms of star power; with Toronto opting to shore up their defense and goaltending.
But as the days pass, fans have to wonder what the endgame is going to be for both of these men, and for one NHL Insider; he believes he has the solution.
Chris Johnston, NHL Insider; joined TSN's 1050 First Up show and spoke candidly about what he believes is the solution and answer to the looming contract scenarios.
"I think I'll go Tavares but I'm not saying Marner isn't going to sign one, I just don't know if the Leafs are going to be able to accommodate the kind of deal he's going to want.

Feeling as though there was probably a path [after the passing of the torch to Auston Matthews] for Tavares to extend the runway in Toronto. Clearly, to me, he was the star of the show and showed such grace in doing so. There's no way that [passing the C to Matthews] was his idea, but he obviously handled it well and so it just seems to me that he's highly motivated to stay in Toronto. Obviously his next contract is going to come at a cap hit that's reduced from where he's at today. So sitting here this morning, I'll say he's more likely to stay."
It's clear to Johnston that Marner is the odd one out and will probably be finding himself headed in a different direction come the summer. Tavares desperately wants to stay in Toronto and is more than likely going to take a discount to do so; whereas Marner is going to command a salary that is north of $10M per year and while he's certainly a formidable player; the Maple Leafs could use that money to go after a 2025 UFA such as Mike Rantanen or Jacob Chychrun, but also use that extra space to sign pending RFA Matthew Knies.
One thing is for certain though: the anticipation of what's going to happen in Toronto is through the roof of the Scotiabank Arena.
