Naturally with the Maple Leafs, this change in leadership has led to widespread discussions with fans and pundits across the league on whether this will make a difference to the Maple Leafs as they prepare for their training camp.
Matthews graciously accepted the honor of becoming the captain of the Maple Leafs after John Tavares led the team for the past five seasons. Even though he was the man who scored the winning goal that took the Maple Leafs to the second round after beating the Tampa Bay Lightning, many will always remember Tavares as captain who had numerous playoff failures.
That failure falls on all the shoulders of who was part of that leadership group who are relatively still with the team today. It remains to be seen on whether this change will make a difference in how the Maple Leafs play even though they have a new head coach, and improved defence core and improved goaltending.
