We recently reported on some new information regarding the status of Jani Hakanpaa and the ongoing saga regarding him and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

But some more information has now come forth and the results don't look positive. According to NHL Insider Chris Johnston on TSN 1050's First Up, he believes that since the contract situation has gone on so long, that it's basically dead in the water.
"The fact that's gone on this long probably doesn't suggest good things, encouraging things," Johnston said in a radio interview on TSN 1050's First Up on Tuesday. "The longer it goes and he doesn't have a contract, it doesn't look like he's gonna end up with one. But the best I can say right now is I don't know 100% it's not going to go that way, just the writing doesn't appear to be too encouraging" Johnston continued.
While Johnston says that nothing in itself is concrete, all the drama surrounding Hakanpaa, including him rocking a jersey of his former team or his camp being suspiciously silent it doesn't look like the 6'7 defenseman will be in Toronto any time soon.
The hesitancy comes from Hakanpaa's potentially career-ending knee injury, and Johnston touches on the Leafs medical staff having their personal opinions.
"This would be just a case where the Leafs would have concern or their doctors or whoever they're relying on for advice that it's too big of a risk that he won't be able to play because of the condition of his knee" Johnston added.
It could behoove Toronto to try and sign Hakanpaa to a PTO and see if he's able to manage the workload and see if his knee holds up, but it could be another case of 'What if?" that plagues each season at some point.
