Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews has been named 4th in the new Daily Faceoff Fantasy Rankings released by Matt Larkin on July 25th.

Fantasy hockey is all the rage, and whether or not you're playing for money or just in a free office pool it can be an exciting and fun way to enjoy hockey; but the difficulty comes in who you should pick. This is where the Daily Faceoff's Matt Larkin comes in.
Larkin released his Top 300 player rankings for the 2024-2025 season, and gives you a thorough breakdown of the criteria used in order to determine who sits where. Factors such as team success, statistics, real-life vs. fantasy value, and upside of potential stars. Sitting near the top of that list is the Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews; ranking 4th trailing only Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon and Leon Draisaitl.
Larkin says this about Matthews:
"He'll never possess the same points ceiling as the names listed above him, but when you score 12 more goals than the next-closest player in the NHL, you belong in the elite first-round tier."
This is a key factor in Matthews ranking as more often than not, goals and points are some of the primary point production methods on a game to game basis. While McDavid, MacKinnon and Draisaitl seem to outscore Matthews in terms of overall production; Matthews blows them out of the water when it comes to shots and shot attempts. He blasts the puck on net, taking a volume approach to goal scoring on top of his extraordinary talent.
Two other Maple Leafs ended up on the list as well: William Nylander reached #22 on the rankings, outshining the likes of Sebastian Aho and Sidney Crosby. Larkin writes about Nylander:
"Nylander will never match his contract-year output again" and "Nylander reached a new level last season" can both be true. Maybe he's not a 98-point scorer again, but I buy him as a 90-point guy with a boatload of shots."
The only other Maple Leaf to join the list happens to be only a few rankings below Nylander, with Mitch Marner coming in with a #27 rank. About Marner:
"Only six players have more points over the past five years. All the trade talk and Marner fatigue can be your friend in fantasy: he could fall to the second or third round and give you 100 points if he stays healthy."
If anyone is a big supporter and enjoyer of fantasy hockey should take a look into the full rankings in order to determine who best to draft and when; if you do you could be the next fantasy champion.
