Some were a bit surprised when Matt Murray re-signed with Toronto, but the netminder clearly had his reasons and with his injury history, it's not hard to see why.
While speaking on the 'Slangin' the Bizkit' podcast; Murray spoke about his injuries and how they affected his career. For more information on that click here
He spoke about betting on himself this year, and now that he's had proper surgery he looks to have a bounce back year:
"This year is just about proving that I can stay healthy and that I got a nice little reset with the surgery, so proving that I can stay healthy and get the job done," Murray said. "That's why I took a one-year deal and it's kind of like a 'prove it' deal to see what I can do and see if I can do both of those things: stay healthy and prove I can still get the job done."
One intriguing thing that Murray spoke about was the reason to sign back with the Maple Leafs; while some players choose for a chance to win, or perhaps they would like a simple change of scenery: this was a more personal consideration.
"The way that we're treated here, the facilities are great, it's close to home for me, which is obviously really nice. I could go on and on about why I like playing here, but the Leafs definitely have a special place in my heart. I felt very fortunate to get the opportunity to sign another one-year [contract] here and stay right where I want to be."
Murray is poised to be the 3rd string goaltender this season but could find time in between the pipes should Joseph Woll or Anthony Stolarz struggle or go down with injury; and with new hips and a fresh outlook it's great news for the Leafs especially come playoff time.
