It's not too often that you sign with a team in free agency, then decide to rep the team you used to play for. To some it's treason, for Jani Hakanpaa it could be a clue.
Jani Hakanpaa was signed to a 2-year deal by the Leafs this offseason in order to shore up their defense as the 6'7 defender would clearly slot into the Top 4 and provide a towering presence to a new look Leafs blue line. While he struggled with injuries, the Leafs decided that if he were to pass a physical and things shape up, he could earn top minutes as long as he stays healthy.
But speculation about his signing being official and the days and weeks that have passed since we heard word of a signing but nothing concrete. Now, it looks like we might have an answer to the delay.
Odd. It doesn't look like Hakanpaa is deciding to rep the team he signed for, and is sticking to his guns with the ol' green and gold. Whether this is a indication of where he prefers to head is yet to be seen, or if maybe it was the only way he could be recognized at the event. For the Leafs sake, they hope it's the latter.
