As the deadline for restricted free agents (RFAs) to accept their qualifying offers has passed, the Maple Leafs have some additional challenges to overcome regarding forwards Connor Dewar and Nick Robertson.
Connor Dewar, a 25-year-old fourth-liner, chose arbitration after rejecting a qualifying offer of $892,500 in early July. Dewar, who split the previous season between the Minnesota Wild and the Maple Leafs, accumulated 19 points through 11 goals and 8 assists.
Despite these modest numbers, Dewar's decision not to accept the initial offer opens a window for negotiations before his arbitration, scheduled between July 20th and August 4th. There's still a possibility for him to ink a deal that better reflects his value and contributions to the team.
In contrast, Nick Robertson's situation has become more complicated. Reported by Chris Johnston on June 30th, Robertson expressed his desire to leave the Maple Leafs, prompting a trade request

Since then, discussions around Robertson's future have intensified. The departure of former Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe and Tyler Bertuzzi's move to Chicago may carve out more space for Robertson in the lineup. Under the guidance of Craig Berube, a Stanley Cup-winning coach, Robertson might reconsider his stance. The question remains whether he will seize the opportunity to enhance his role or continue pursuing a move away from Toronto.
Despite Toronto's struggle to bolster their playoff scoring, Robertson represents a crucial asset. At just 22, his impressive shot and scoring ability, coupled with an affordable contract, make him valuable either as a roster player or a trade asset. His defensive play may need refinement, but his offensive skills are undeniable.
As the Maple Leafs navigate this off-season, the outcomes for Dewar and Robertson will significantly influence their roster configuration. With potential gaps looming and strategic decisions pending, Toronto's approach to managing their young talent could set the tone for their next season's campaign.
