With speculation running rampant about the status of defenseman Jani Hakanpaa and whether or not he can continue playing; one Leafs reporter thinks it's time to run.

Hakanpaa recently spoke about his injury status believing that he can play but Nick Alberga of Leafs Morning Take has given his candid thoughts regarding the entire situation.
"The whole thing is just bizarre to me, and my stance probably won't change. If the guy's not healthy, or you don't think he's healthy, there's no need to sign him. Just reallocate that money somewhere else. If not, just don't use it right now.

This is a team that is in cap hell every year. Any penny you can save for a guy who you're not sure is going to play for you, you just walk away... Again, the Dallas Stars have been one of the best scouting teams in the NHL in the last 10-15 years and if they're walking away from a guy, it should tell you something. If their doctors are saying something, it should tell you something, so just a really, really bizarre situation that I can't believe has dragged on this long."
Hakanpaa signed a 2-year deal this offseason though the contract has not yet been finalized due to the hesistancy of Toronto's medical staff to clear the towering defenseman. Though it was reported he signed, there has yet to be an official announcement from the team.
Hakanpaa's presence in Toronto would be a welcome one if his injury status can be cleared up, and perhaps there is something in the training room in Toronto that differs from Dallas that could help the Finn to properly recover and heal.
All things considered it was a low-risk gamble, though they could have spent the money on someone like an Erik Gustafsson or reworked the Oliver Ekman-Larsson deal to sign Matt Dumba.
Sometimes, it's just better to cut and run.
