The Toronto Maple Leafs may be preparing to reengage discussions with veteran defenseman Mark Giordano as a potential deal with former Stars defenseman Jani Hakanpaa may come apart.

Hakanpaa has been reported of suffering from a knee injury that may result in his contract going to long term injury reserve. Reports explained that his knee is a bone-on-bone situation which could prevent him from playing hockey ever again. He had signed a contract with Toronto for a two year deal the cap hit of $1.5 million per season.
This could lead general manager Brad Treliving to look at other options which could include Giordano as a potential 7th defenceman add an extremely low cost due to his age at 41 years old.
If the Maple Leafs could strike a deal of a one-year contract with league minimum of $775,000, Giordano would give the dressing room invaluable experience that they have been enjoying for the past couple of years.
He would also likely not play every game as the Leafs would preserve his ability to play do to the slow down with age.
At this point, the Maple Leafs do not seem to be keen on bringing him back, but the team knows what they're getting if they decided to sign him. Giordano has played 1148 games, scoring 158 goals with 577 points who is the oldest player in the NHL. He averaged 16 minutes and 37 seconds of ice time and gives the dressing room that leadership quality that all teams look for.
Time will tell if the Leafs pursue this.
