In a move that hopefully won't come back to haunt them, the Toronto Maple Leafs have lost the rights to two prospects who now become free agents.

Maple Leafs Latest reported earlier regarding the contract statuses of Veeti Miettinen and Mike Koster and how August 15th was a very important date for the front office.
Miettinen had a solid NCAA career with 118 points in 146 games while playing for St. Cloud St. University in Minnesota and had an absurd zero penalty minutes for the entirety of his college career. That was no typo; he genuinely did not take one penalty even accidentally. He's a smaller forward who may not have fit in to the Maple Leafs current mentality and that's why they decided not to sign him.
Koster, a former teammate of current Maple Leaf Matthew Knies is also a bit undersized as a defenseman but has the puck moving ability and defensive IQ to be able to solidify a back end for some team in the future. Koster registered 14 goals and 55 assists in 140 games for the University of Minnesota.
While they may not have found a spot on a Maple Leafs roster currently undergoing a mentality shift, adding bigger and beefier bodies in order to bring a more shutdown intimidating presence; both these talented players will surely latch onto some other team in the very near future.
