Once news of the tragedy broke, people from all over posted tributes and memories of Gaudreau, with several fans of the Flames and Blue Jackets setting up memorials at their respective arenas; many fans left purple Gatorade as an homage as well.
Current Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving has a close connection to Gaudreau thanks to their time together spent in Calgary, and news of Johnny's passing deeply upset him. As a GoFundMe has been set up for Matthew's widow Meredith, several players and people who were close to Gaudreau have made donations. Treliving is one of those, and decided to honor the brothers in a very fitting way.
Treliving decided to pay tribute to Gaudreau by donating an amount reminiscent of the player's #13. While an unfortunate tragedy for the sports world, the outpouring of support for the Gaudreau family is incredible. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this time.
