Earlier this summer, it was announced by the Maple Leafs that Hakanpaa had signed a contract that was 2 years, $3M and Brad Treliving spoke highly of his skills just after the announcement on July 1st.
But as the weeks rolled on, it appeared that issues were arising between the two parties and Hakanpaa has not been registered as an official roster player, with even his contract being removed from several contract tracking sites. This still leaves with the Maple Leafs having $1.2 million in cap space available, but more could come through if the deal is nixed.
Questions have arisen regarding his health as there is an apparent lingering knee issue that may prevent him from playing hockey this year, and some may thought for life. It remains to be seen if that's the case but for now he is still not registered with the team, and Leafs fans are hopeful there's at least some news in the coming days.
