Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving spoke a bit to media regarding injured defenseman Jani Hakanpaa who allegedly signed a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The question was broached during the unveiling of Auston Matthews as the new captain of the Maple Leafs and Treliving gave a brief explanation to what his status is with the team.
Earlier this summer, it was announced by the Maple Leafs that Hakanpaa had signed a contract that was 2 years, $3M and Brad Treliving spoke highly of his skills just after the announcement on July 1st.
"A penalty killer, one of the areas looking back at last season we wanted to address was our penalty kill and that's an area Jani really shines in his ability to kill penalties. You saw that in Dallas over the years and specifically this past season," he said on July 1. "We've got a group of defensemen. I'd rather have too many than not enough. And we'll try to sort this out in the coming days."
But as the weeks rolled on, it appeared that issues were arising between the two parties and Hakanpaa has not been registered as an official roster player, with even his contract being removed from several contract tracking sites. This still leaves with the Maple Leafs having $1.2 million in cap space available, but more could come through if the deal is nixed.
Questions have arisen regarding his health as there is an apparent lingering knee issue that may prevent him from playing hockey this year, and some may thought for life. It remains to be seen if that's the case but for now he is still not registered with the team, and Leafs fans are hopeful there's at least some news in the coming days.
