Maple Leafs considering PTO players to improve roster

Nick Alberga of theleafsnation.com thinks the Maple Leafs will attempt to bring in one or two PTO players as several free agents remain on the market. Typically, when a player is signed to a PTO, they will attempt to show the team that they can play at their level which will award them a one-year contract.

The Maple Leafs currently have $1.2 million in cap space which could be awarded to a PTO player that will stand out during training camp. The Maple Leafs have lost a few key players especially on their forward lines due to unrestricted free agency which could warrant a signing.

Another advantage to a PTO is that if the player does not work out, the team simply cuts them and both parties go their separate ways with no loss in financial or cap space.

According to Puck Pedia.com, there are several prominent unrestricted free agents who could help the Maple Leafs in the future which includes Kevin Labanc, Blake Wheeler, James van Riemsdyk, Kailer Yamamoto and Filip Zadina.

It's safe to say that the Maple Leafs could bring in several PTO's to assess their levels and their abilities to play with head coach Craig Berube a system along with Auston Matthews and the rest of the team.
