But one stat has been revealed recently by the NHL that Matthews led the NHL in hitting the post or the crossbar amongst all other top scoring players. Matthews had 20 combined posts and crossbars which would have led to 20 more goals if they would have crossed the red line which means he had the potential to have scored 89 goals last year; only 3 off of the record held by Wayne Gretzky.
Of course, that's not how things work and he ended up scoring just 69 which was an incredible feat to begin with. But this stat shows how determined he was to score as much as possible and how accurate his shot is as several times; he beat the goaltender but could not put it in the net. Matthews also led the Leafs in mid-range goals and shots with 22 goals and 126 shots, proving that his lethality covers every inch of the offensive zone.
This season will likely be one of the pivotal moments in Leafs history as many people will have their eyes on the team with major potential changes in the lineup on the table for next year if contracts are not signed. One thing for sure, Matthews will put himself again in front of the net trying to score as many goals as possible.
