Leafs organization provides important update on goaltender Matt Murray

An update on that front is in the works now.

Murray has already played two of the three games he was loaned to the Marlies. Multiple NHL Insiders reported that the Leafs still had the ability to apply for an extension on Murray's conditioning loan, which would have allowed Murray to play an additional two games beyond his original three-game loan.

The Leafs won't be extending Murray's conditioning loan, according to the official statement from Marlies coach John Gruden on Friday.

Murray has posted putrid numbers and a 1-1-0 record thus far during his conditioning loan, which has not gone according to plan.

There was no expectation that he would post back-to-back shutouts, but you would have hoped he would put up better numbers than a 3.92 GAA and a.852 SV% Being a former two-time Stanley Cup champion, even with his lengthy absence, he's still far superior.

There is no word on whether Ilya Samsonov or Joseph Woll will get the nod for Game 1 against the Bruins, as the Leafs have not shared any details with regard to their starting goalie.

Murray is expected to return to the Maple Leafs this weekend, though he will be fourth in the pecking order behind Samsonov, Woll and third string netminder Martin Jones.

Hopefully, the Leafs won't have to rely on Murray at all during this run, because if disaster strikes and Murray winds up seeing action, his play with the Marlies this week doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.
