The Maple Leafs are currently navigating through a challenging phase in their playoff series against the Boston Bruins, with Auston Matthews at less than 100%. The situation is becoming even more concerning with the Leafs down 2-1 in the series.

Adding to their woes, superstar center Auston Matthews was absent from Wednesday's game day activities due to illness, Matthews also missed Friday's practice, raising concerns about his readiness for a critical Game 4.
Matthews, who shone brightly in Game 2 by netting three points, including a spectacular game-winning goal, seemed markedly less effective in the following contest. His struggle in Game 3, where he failed to notch a point, was later attributed to battling flu-like symptoms. Despite this, Matthews played over 23 minutes, a decision that might warrant reconsideration by Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe given Matthews' current health status.
In the backdrop of Matthews' health concerns, the Leafs have also had to cope without key players Bobby McMann and William Nylander throughout the series. The team's challenges have been compounded by a mix of controversial officiating and inconsistent play, which was evident in their 5-1 loss in Game 1, the narrow 3-2 victory in Game 2 and the circus that was Game 3.
As the Leafs took the ice for a full practice session on Friday, the absence of Matthews, described as a "maintenance day" by TSN's Chris Johnston, highlighted the ongoing struggles within the camp. The original tweet reporting this update can be found here:
Looking ahead to Game 4 on Saturday, there's cautious optimism that Matthews will lace up the skates, albeit possibly at less than his full capability. This scenario poses a strategic dilemma for Keefe, who must balance the imperative of winning with the need to manage his star player's health effectively. The coming game could very well pivot on how well the Leafs adapt to these challenges and if they can harness their resilience to even the series.
