While the Toronto Maple Leafs play upon a frozen pool of water; a fellow Maple Leaf (of the red and white variety) has dominated swimming in the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Toronto has found limited success in their playoff aspirations in recent seasons; save for the Raptors NBA Championship win and has found little to celebrate. However, the city has a new hero to cheer on and her success in unmatched in Canadian history.
Summer McIntosh, a Toronto native and only 17 years old has captured three gold medals for Canada; a historic outing that saw her top the podium in the 400m individual medley, 200m butterfly and the 200m individual medley. She also set Olympic records in the 200m medley and 200m butterfly with times of 2:06.56 and 2:03.03 respectively.
McIntosh also ties fellow Canadian swimmer Penny Oleksiak (sister of Seattle Kraken defender Jamie Oleksiak) with 4 total medals representing Canada. Oleksiak also received attention from the Maple Leafs when she was seen on the jumbotron casually displaying her medals while attending a game.
We can all say with certainty, the pool water can't stop the heat of Summer. Congratulations Summer, you deserve it.
