A recent stat has been revealed by the Dailyfaceoff.com showing Leafs superstar Auston Matthews continues to ascend as one of the best players in the game.
The stat reflects era adjusted goals and puts several of the best players in the league against the best of the best from the past. In Matthews case the stat looked at how many goals have been scored over how many games played and it puts him second overall amongst the great players of the last 40 years.
With Wayne Gretzky out in front, Matthews is only 31 goals behind and has played over 40 games less putting him on pace for 55. Last season was an incredible one for Number 34 as he scored an eye popping 69 goals and being only 26 years old. Over his last five seasons in ranking goals per game, he was first three times he also had a fourth-place finish in a 13th place finish.
Maple Leafs fans and Maple Leafs management are hoping that Matthews will continue this torrid pace of scoring goals and being an offensive threat for many years to come while trying to take the Maple Leafs through the Stanley Cup playoffs in hopes to raising the cup sooner than later.
With the moves completed this summer and the Leafs defense core improved, it remains to be seen on how the Leafs will fare as they prepare for training camp that will begin in mid-September.
In the meantime, fans can only wonder how many goals Matthews will score this season.
