Doug Gilmour is a legend in Toronto, captaining the team starting in 1994 until 1997 and put up a franchise record 127 points in his first year in the Blue and White, adding 35 points in the playoffs which saw Toronto lose to the Los Angeles Kings in Game 7 after a controversial non-call in Game 6; something Gilmour was front and center of.
Cherry is known not to shy away from his biases, often openly criticizing the Maple Leafs while on Coach's Corner; the Hockey Night in Canada intermission show he hosted alongside Ron Maclean. Known for his flamboyant suits and colourful vocabulary, Cherry would capture Canada's attention for 10 minutes every Saturday night.
However in recent years, Cherry garned a lot of flak for comments he made, specifically the 'You People' comment which irked many fans and non fans alike and led to his dismissal from HNIC and Sportsnet altogether. He hasn't missed a beat and still hosts his weekly 'Don Cherry's Grapevine' podcast.
Whether or not Cherry was playing a persona in order to garner the attention of millions of Canadians is unknown, but his legacy in the annals of Canadian hockey history still rings as loud and clear as 'Grapes' could ever be.
