Although he may not be the captain of the team anymore, John Tavares' impact cannot be overstated, and the Maple Leafs are hoping he sticks around past season's end and possibly, for life.

At the end of the year, Tavares' 7-year deal he signed with Toronto will expire and he will become a free agent for the first time since 2018. While it would be sad to see him depart after all he gave to the team and the city; all hope may not be lost when it comes to JT in T.O.
On TSN's 1050 First Up radio show, TSN NHL insider Chris Johnston explains that Tavares' departure may not be on the horizon and could be figured out way sooner than later:
"Those conversations are probably going to get started at some point."
Tavares' indirectly echoed these statements in his passing of the torch during Wednesday's press conference:
"I want to thank everyone who has been a part of my captaincy, and Leafs Nation's trust and belief in me during my time as captain. I cannot wait to get started next month, and continue our work of bringing the Stanley Cup home back to Toronto."
Although it's obvious he wants to bring a Cup home this year, there is no doubt that Tavares looks to be wanting to stay around for the long haul. Who knows, maybe with a deep playoff run JT would be so kind to take a hometown discount, but at the end of the day: #91 will forever live in the hearts of the 416.
