If the Boston Bruins have to break the bank in order to lock up Jeremy Swayman, the Toronto Maple Leafs may end up being the culprits; if history is to be believed.
In yet another heartbreaking series loss, the Maple Leafs fell to Boston in 7 games during the first round of the 2023-24 Stanley Cup Playoffs and it was mainly due to the elite play of netminder Jeremy Swayman. Building off a solid three seasons he's due for a pay raise and according to one Maple Leafs pundit; it's a Toronto thing.
With Swayman coming into his own in the last few seasons and cementing himself as the Bruins netminder of the future; especially with Linus Ullmark out of the picture, he deserves to be paid like a #1 goaltender. After posting a 79-33-15 record to go along with a 2.34 GAA and .919 save percentage in 132 games there is no doubt that he is in the upper echelon of goaltenders in the NHL.
While $10M per year seems like a stretch for a goaltender still only 25 years old, but it's not often you see elite crease protectors progress at such a high rate, especially in high pressure situations. A 4th Round pick that has turned into one of the best goalies in the league is a story that deserves a big paycheck at the end of the day.
