The Toronto Maple Leafs may be in for some good news regarding Max Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi following an unfortunate loss in Game 7.

Last summer, both players were signed to a one-year contract, a strategic move by the Leafs to evaluate their compatibility and potential for a long-term commitment. With their contracts set to expire, and free agency looming on July 1, the question now is whether either, or both, will stay in Toronto.

During a crucial period in the latter half of the season, Domi and Bertuzzi proved themselves as invaluable assets to the Leafs, sparking discussions about their futures with the club. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman recently shared insights that suggest both players might be inclined to stay.

According to Friedman, while initial talks for Bertuzzi involved a longer-term deal, complexities led to a one-year agreement. Despite the challenges and the intense scrutiny from the media and fans, which reportedly gave Bertuzzi a vibe reminiscent of Ryan O'Reilly, he has developed a fondness for his teammates and the team culture.

Friedman's comments shed light on the internal dynamics:

"When Bertuzzi was signed, the Maple Leafs discussed a longer-term deal, but it couldn't work, so they said let's do one year and see how it goes.

There have been some rumours around that he kind of has the Ryan O'Reilly vibe that he doesn't like all of the scrutiny and attention in Toronto. I think there is some truth to that, but from what I have heard, it doesn't necessarily mean he's against re-signing.

I've heard, actually, he really enjoyed part of the group, he likes his teammates, and he's interesting in staying - and I believe the team is interested in having him back. As always, though, it comes down to contract... I don't think it's an absolute no on Bertuzzi."

On the other hand, Max Domi's situation contrasts with Bertuzzi's, as he seems to embrace the high-profile atmosphere of Toronto. Domi's performance and attitude suggest he is looking to extend his stay, pending favorable contract negotiations. Friedman expressed surprise at any other outcome for Domi, indicating a strong mutual interest between player and team:

"I think Domi wants to stay. I think it's going to come down to negotiations, because you know that Domi is still pretty young. He's going to want some term, and I'm just curious to see how the Maple Leafs are going to feel about that. I would be shocked if Domi didn't want to stay.

This was a really good fit for him and I simply think it comes down to contract negotiations."

The offseason will indeed be a test of balance between desires and practicalities. The decisions on Domi and Bertuzzi will hinge not just on their wishes, but on the financial aspects and the strategic direction the Maple Leafs decide to pursue.

As the dust settles on another season, the choices made in the coming months could well dictate the trajectory of the team's future.
