Toronto Maple Leafs legend Doug Gilmour sayd his "Killer" nickname, by which he became synonymously known during his legendary career, was inspired by serial killer Charles Manson.

The former Leafs captain, who averaged nearly a point per game in his career, including scoring 111 points in the 1993-94 season for the Leafs, was asked about how he got his famous nickname during an interview on the Missing Curfew podcast.
"Who gave it to you and did it have anything to do with the movie Slapshot's Killer Carlson," Gilmour was asked.
"It did not," the former Leafs captain answered, before revealing it was given to him by a former St. Louis Blues teammate.

"Brian Sutter was my roommate," Gilmour answered. "He was our captain for five years and he taught me how to compete each and every night. When people say don't take the game home with you, he says take the game home with you. I came out of junior with a lot of points, but I made the team in St. Louis as a checker. I was 155 pounds and I had a mullet so Brian called me Charlie, it was for Charlie Manson," Gilmour said.

"The name changed over time to Killer, but to this day if I see Brian, he calls me Charlie."
