Former Maple Leafs forward Alexander Barabanov has taken time to give his candid opinion why his tenure was short and not so sweet.

Upon signing with Toronto in 2020, Barabanov had high hopes for sticking with the NHL roster, however that was upended only a handful of games into the season as he was shipped off to the San Jose Sharks before finding his way back to the KHL this season.
Speaking to RG.org, Barabanov did not hold back on his feelings towards the Maple Leafs:
"It's tough to break into the Toronto roster," Barabanov said. "Many factors have to come together. During negotiations, they can tell you that you're going to play one position, and then, like in my case, it turns out not to be the case.

I played five minutes in the first game, and in the second, four minutes. After that, I called [agent] Dan [Milstein] and asked what I was doing wrong. But the team had a great scout, Jim [Roque], who communicated with me helpfully and told me that I needed to play at least 20 games to understand what kind of league this was. But then they traded me to San Jose, where I played 18 minutes a game. And I realized that you can easily play that much time."
It seems like Barabanov got the ol' run around from the Maple Leafs front office and it gives some good insight into how the Maple Leafs conduct their business with free agents. Could it be a case of trying to schmooze the players to come in only to yank the rug out when the front office gets their man? Or is it genuine incompetence when it comes to being honest? My guess is towards the former.
Barabanov ended up playing a solid role for the Sharks after his departure from the Maple Leafs, scoring 32 goals and 74 assists in a depth role for the Sharks. He recently signed a contract to play with AK Bars Kazan of the KHL; a team featuring former NHLers Nick Petan and Dmitrij Jaskin.
