According to NHL Insider Mike Augello, it was reported that the Maple Leafs are interested in signing low-cost free agents which would include James van Riemsdyk. Last season, he spent his year with the Boston Bruins on a $1 million deal and played 71 games, scoring 11 goals with 27 assists for 38 points and was a +7.
Last season, the Maple Leafs had trouble with their bottom 6 forwards and tried to mix and match as many players as possible to find the right combination to ignite secondary scoring, but the team struggled to find any chemistry.
Van Riemsdyk also holds a large frame as he is 6'3 and 208 pounds. Known for his power play specialty and standing in front of the net to deflect pucks, JVR could certainly give the Leafs a boost in those areas even though he is currently 35 years old.
The Leafs have roughly $1.2 million in cap space and adding a player like JVR with his experience would be money well spent. It remains to be seen if Treliving feels the same way, but he remains the top free agent that's left out of this offseason that remains unsigned.
