Speaking on his 'Leafs Morning Take' podcast, former Toronto defenseman Jay Rosehill held nothing back regarding the future of Mitch Marner, and takes a jab at his agent and father as well.
Mitch Marner has often gained a lot of flak for his inability to score when it matters most. Often seen lighting up the scoreboard during the regular season, it feels more like a ghost on the ice come playoff time. Toronto isn't rushing to sign the winger and must feel motivated in a contract year in order to secure the bag.
Rosehill agreed, stating that he believes Marner is set to have the biggest season of his career, and may end up breaking the century mark for points; the first time in his career.

"I think the guy is going to break 100 points this year. I think he's going to play with a chip on his shoulder. He's a pretty good player, he's just missing that special sauce that everyone is craving in Toronto and that's playoff performance. He's this big stud who needs to put the team on his back and he just hasn't done it. But I think he's going to have that chip on his shoulder.
He's going to come out of the gates hot. It is absolutely still a contract year for him and he wants to get the bag and he wants to be a stud. He's going to have every motivation in the world to go absolutely hammer down this season. I think he's going to do it and I think he's going to put up 100 points."
Marner is set to have a huge year and while having a successful regular season looks great for the next contract; the ability to be considered a playoff producer is of greater importance. It's those games that matter, and for Rosehill; Marner needs to focus up soon in that regard.
"I hope that he has matured enough to realize that nobody here gives a s**t [about the regular season]. The only people that give a s**t about your regular season are you and your agent, and your dad probably."
He's right. Maple Leafs fans have had loads of regular season success lately, but to have only one playoff round victory to show for it in the last several years; it's up to players like Marner to produce and come through when it matters. Rosehill taking a shot at Marner's agent and father also gives a bit to bite on due to the fact that they might not really care if Marner wins, because they get paid; but this is purely speculation on Rosehill's part.
If Marner wants to become like
Leon Draisaitl, he's gonna have to buckle down and start putting down numbers come playoff time.
