Former Maple Leaf describes playing with Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid

It must be a bit overwhelming to play with both Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews but for Tyler Ennis, it was normal; even if he was a bit starstruck.

The newest captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs (Matthews) and the league's most dynamic scorer (McDavid) both offer a different game than each other but one thing they share is unbelievable generational talent and both men are sure-fire Hall of Fame candidates. To even get the chance to share the ice with one of them would be a surreal experience but former NHLer Tyler Ennis got the best of both worlds.

Speaking on the Spittin' Chiclets podcast hosted by Barstool Sports' Mike Grinnell and former NHLers Ryan Whitney and Paul Bissonnette; Ennis gave his insight into what it was like to play with both superstars:

''Way more skilled than me, and he's six foot three, jacked and he shoots the puck like Joe Sakic, you know what I mean? So you're like, this is a different beast right here. He's got Patrick Kane skill, shoots the puck.''

High praise for Matthews to be compared to not only an NHL legend in Sakic; but his fellow American compatriot in Kane; someone who he undoubtedly will surpass in goals scored but has a Hall of Fame legacy regardless.

But AM34 wasn't the only superstar Ennis was lucky to skate alongside as he got the chance to play with the Oilers' centre for two years from 2019-2021. Unsurprisingly, Ennis' sentiment about McDavid echoes those from all around the league:

"I would say the similarities are that they're so unattainably good. You know what I mean? So first of all, just their natural talent is crazy. Connor, same deal. First practice with Connor, you're like, that's not a human.''

Matthews and McDavid are both coming off incredible seasons with their respective clubs. Auston Matthews was recently named captain of the team and is riding a 69-goal season wave of momentum for 2024-2025. McDavid meanwhile registered 132 points for the Oilers, who unfortunately fell to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Finals.
