Former Leafs defenseman offers strategy to Craig Berube's staff
As the Maple Leafs prepare for Craig Berube's coaching staff, a former Leafs defenseman offers a key strategy from his former late coaching legend Pat Quinn.
Former Leafs defenseman Cory Cross stated in his interview that Quinn recognized his team had a bevy of stars that could play together and produce great success. He also felt that no system was necessary, and it led to many playoff years.

Quinn, who was a former Maple Leafs defenseman became the Maple Leafs head coach in 1998. He was a ray of hope for Maple Leafs fans at the time after the team had gone through several years of dismal seasons and no playoff games. He offered fans a completely different way of the game in terms of up-tempo style and a constant attack on offense.
Shortly after becoming coach, he took the reins of general manager and improved the team even more.
This led to six consecutive playoff appearances including two conference finals in 1999 in 2002 and the remainder a mix of second round and first round exits.

Fast forward to 2024 it appears that Craig Berube will have a similar designed team and one of the most talented teams he's ever coached. Much like Quinn, he will hold accountability to all his players and will not hesitate in either calling them out or making sure they understand that their play needs to improve through ice time.
Perhaps cross is onto something and maybe Berube could look at that strategy as a potential option for the Maple Leafs. But currently of systems and defensive play that have been proven to be successful, it remains to be seen on whether Berube will look at this.
