Toronto native Chris Tanev is no stranger to the city, but his recent move to the Toronto Maple Leafs marks a thrilling new chapter in his career.

The anticipation surrounding his arrival was heightened when it was revealed that the first person to welcome him wasn't a teammate, but the Leafs' new head coach, Craig Berube.
The transaction that brought Tanev to Toronto unfolded swiftly during the NHL Entry Draft. The Maple Leafs secured Tanev's negotiating rights on the second day and soon after inked a deal with the 34-year-old defenseman. The six-year contract boasts a significant cap hit of $4.5 million annually, signaling high expectations for Tanev's role with the team.
Tanev didn't waste time making his presence felt in Toronto. Within the first few days, he was seen engaging with the community, signing autographs at local hockey camps. This gesture not only endeared him to fans but also showcased his readiness to immerse himself in the Leafs' culture.
In a revealing conversation on TSN 1050's 'OverDrive,' Tanev expressed his enthusiasm about playing under Coach Berube. His words resonated with respect and anticipation:
"Obviously, Coach is a winner, he's won a Cup, he's played a long time in the league, he knows the game," said Tanev. "Right when Toronto traded for me, he was the first call that I got and he wanted to express how he felt about me and where I could play in the lineup and how I could help the team.

The initial interactions between Tanev and Berube have been promising, with both parties taking the time to understand each other's perspectives and build rapport. «After signing, I met him last Wednesday and sat down for a bit and got to know each other a little bit. That's a big part of being successful, just to talk and communicate and he was awesome from the short time I've known him.»
Coach Berube's proactive approach doesn't stop with Tanev. He has been actively engaging with other key players, including Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews, as the team ramps up preparations for the upcoming season. This hands-on method has not gone unnoticed among the squad, with several players openly appreciating the chance to align with Berube's vision for the Leafs.
As the season approaches, the true test will begin for both Tanev and Berube. The early signs are positive, and there's a palpable buzz around what this partnership could bring to the team. For now, both the coach and the player are enjoying a honeymoon period, filled with optimism and mutual respect. Only time will tell how this dynamic will influence the Leafs' quest for glory in the demanding NHL landscape.
