Calle Jarnkrok could be a key player come April says Leafs Nation host

Calle Jarnkrok could be considered underrated; a guy who can give you a handful of goals while also playing defensively sound and keeps his nose out of trouble is vital to success for any team.

Fresh off an up and down season that saw him plagued by injury, Leafs forward Calle Jarnkrok still put up 21 points in a valiant effort; but the Leafs winger is set to break out and be a big part of the team come playoff time.

At least that is what Leafs Nation podcast host Nick Alberga thinks. He released an article Sunday and wrote about how he thinks Jarnkrok fits into the system and how he could be a boon for the Leafs in the playoffs.

Alberga spoke about the versatility of Jarnkrok and how he can play a complete game, including needing to slide into a defensive positioning role if directed. He also talked about his contract being a bargain deal for what the forward offers to the team.

"That said, Jarnkrok still has two years left on his deal at $2.1 million per season, and ultimately, that still should be viewed as a bargain average annual value. He's a good player, and without question, he could be poised for a strong bounce-back season."

While he would generally be suited for a bottom-6 role, he could find himself playing top line minutes if struggles or injuries occur; former Leaf coach Sheldon Keefe was known to employ Jarnkrok extensively and it will be interesting to see if there is more of the same with a new coach.

Jarnkrok's versatility, grittiness and ability to score would be a killer addition to any bottom line as Alberga states in his article:

"In a perfect world, I would love Jarnkrok on the fourth line to kick off a playoff series. He's the type of player that can make a massive difference in that type of role. Having said that, the Leafs don't possess the depth necessary to make that a reality right now. Instead, he will probably float around a bit until the team establishes an identity. Mark my words: He will prove to be a useful player next season. I can't wait until the narrative changes again on him.
