Bettman at it again, Leafs newest CBA victim of NHL Commissioner

The reputation of NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is less than stellar, to say the least; and his newest venture may irk arguably the most popular team in the league.

This game is as much a sport as it is a business. Teams are known for wiggling their way into a lower cap threshold or finding legal loopholes to maximize their every dollar while also being profitable. Gary Bettman only wants them to do that on his watch, and the Leafs didn't listen.

The Hockey News' Jim Parsons along with Eric Duhatschek of The Athletic wrote about how the league is investigating the Chris Tanev contract, and Bettman sounds bitter.

According to Duhatschek:

"If the league genuinely wanted to do that [change the rules], they would find ways of plugging the loopholes in the system. This, by the way, is inherently just like the NHL. As soon as a rule is in place, teams try to find creative ways of circumventing it. Ever since the cap system was introduced, teams have found complicated, but legal ways to get around the theoretical cap ceiling."

Bettman made his bed and now has to lie in it; if he was so worried about the LTIR being exploited he could very easily change the rules. He is the boss after all. The use of LTIR as a means to dump bad contracts behind, legally, is all but a secret in today's NHL; Carey Price and Mark Stone are recent examples. Bettman should be more focused on the rules he so dearly cares about, than trying to play investors and lining his own pockets.

You would think a lawyer would be able to find a way to close the book on something he created, but this is Gary Bettman we're talking about. He helped introduce the NBA salary cap, he's instilled an iron fist in the NHL. If anything needs a change in hockey, the Commissioner's office.
