The Nashville Predators have been beneficiaries of exceptional goaltending, but their blessing has now become a curse with Yaroslav Askarov's path the NHL blocked.

With the addition of Askarov, selected 11th overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, it appeared Nashville was poised to continue this legacy of talented goalies. However, emerging reports suggest that Askarov may be growing restless with his role within the organization.
According to Michael Gallagher, a Predators beat reporter, Askarov's agent, Dan Milstein, expressed concerns during an interview with a Russian media outlet. Milstein's comments highlighted the tension brewing behind the scenes:
Askarov has the potential & should become an elite goaltender in the NHL. Recently we have been working together with the club under different scenarios. Yaroslav has proven himself that he's an NHL player.

The plot thickened as the Predators decided to extend Saros' contract. In the lead-up to the trade deadline, Saros' future seemed uncertain amid increasing speculation. However, Nashville's late-season surge helped cement their decision to retain him, culminating in an 8-year contract extension worth $61.92 million. This move, while securing the Predators' goaltending short-term, raised questions about Askarov's immediate future with the team.
Adding complexity to the situation, Nashville signed backup goaltender Scott Wedgewood to a multi-year deal during the free agency period. This decision not only strengthens the team's goaltending depth but also suggests a significant setback for Askarov, signaling that he might continue as a backup or remain in the AHL, despite being primed for a larger role.
At 22 years old, Askarov has demonstrated impressive skills in the AHL over the past seasons, boasting a .911 save percentage (SV%) and a 2.50 goals against average (GAA) across 92 games, with a 56-29-6 record. His performance suggests readiness for the NHL, yet the path forward in Nashville appears blocked.
As frustration mounts for the young Russian, other NHL teams are surely taking notice. One such team could be the Toronto Maple Leafs, who, with goaltenders Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz locked into contracts, might still find the allure of a talent like Askarov too compelling to ignore. Leafs GM Brad Treliving would be wise to explore this opportunity, as a goaltender of Askarov's caliber rarely hits the market.
For Askarov and the Predators, the coming months could be decisive. If Nashville cannot offer a clear route to significant NHL playing time, a trade may be the best solution for all parties involved, allowing Askarov the chance to shine on a stage befitting his talents.
