With more than 7 months remaining until Auston Matthews and William Nylander are eligible to sign new deals with the Leafs, we have seen a lot of chatter over whether either, especially Matthews, will re-sign or head to free agency in the summer of 2024.
Many of the well-known pundits tend to agree that Matthews is likely to remain in Toronto long-term, barring an earth-shattering turn of events, but it hasn't prevented many from talking about whether or not Matthews will return to Arizona or sign elsewhere in the league two summers from now.
One of Matthews' latest comments is also adding fuel to the fire and drumming up conversations surrounding whether or not he has plans of signing with another Eastern Conference team.
During a recent "Leaf to Leaf" social media video released by the team, which featured Michael Bunting firing off questions to Auston Matthews, the reigning Rocket Richard Trophy winner and league MVP revealed that his favourite city to play in is probably New York "for lots of reasons".
He also listed LA and Florida as nice locations to play in due to the weather, but it was the way he lit up when talking about New York that caught people's attention.
Naturally, it was implied that, as a Leaf, his favourite spot to travel to was New York. Nevertheless, the choice of words by Matthews has every rival fanbase taking shots at the Leafs' fanbase and teasing Matthews' eventual departure.
Unfortunately, as Leafs fans, we're going to have to get used to the wild speculation for at least another 7 months, but up to another season and a half.
Thankfully, we've gotten used to tuning phasing out the outside noise.
