Doug Armstrong lived up his last name, acquiring two of Edmonton's young players by strong-arming them into declining the St. Louis Blues' offer sheets.
On Tuesday, per NHL Insider Chris Johnston; Edmonton declined to match the offer sheets presented by St. Louis for forwards Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway.
Edmonton receives those 2025 2nd and 3rd Round picks, but the haul could have been higher had St. Louis not gamed the system; offering the maximum amount while minimizing the collateral should they sign. This move, while unfortunate for Edmonton due to them losing two prospective game-changers, allows Edmonton a bit more cap flexibility and even more should Evander Kane miss the season on LTIR.
St. Louis signs Broberg, a 23-year old defenseman standing 6'4 who is coming off a rocky season with Edmonton as he only registered two assists in 12 games and didn't find much playing time but when he did; could not translate the hype of being the 8th overall pick into anything tangible. A fresh start in St. Louis will no doubt be a benefit and could kickstart his career, but at the very least a change of scenery is a positive. He looks to solidify the back end and easily could fit into a Top 4 in St. Louis.
Holloway, the 14th overall pick in 2020 has had a little more success in Edmonton as far as the scoresheet goes but otherwise it's been underwhelming. He's scored 18 points in 89 games and much like Broberg, has yet to find his rhythm in the league. He's a big solid winger who can fit anywhere in the lineup and will certainly help accelerate the rebuild in St. Louis; he will make the Top 9 forwards easily and could find himself with top minutes should injuries or a hot streak happen.
