Edmonton Oilers star Leon Draisaitl has just become the richest player in the NHL, at least in terms of AAV as he just signed an 8-year extension with an average of $14M per year.

Auston Matthews was the previous holder of the highest-paid player in the league after signing his extension last season, where is set to earn $13.25M per season for the next 4 seasons, but it didn't last long as Edmonton decided to lock up their superstar until 2032 and will surely do the same for Connor McDavid once his contract year comes.
The deal is for a total of $112M, an amount that is incredibly generous but reflects the play that Draisaitl has given Edmonton and is coming off the heels of his first 8-year extension signed all the way back in 2017. Draisaitl scored 41 goals and added 65 assists last year while helping the Oilers reach the Stanley Cup Finals; he's registered 347 goals and 503 assists in 719 games and is often seen on the highlight reel every time he plays.
Draisaitl will enter the season as the #1 paid player in the league, however we'll se how long it stands this time as surely names like Connor McDavid will be getting a contract worth way more than $14M; the cap is going to increase and so will the player's bank accounts.
