The term 'curse' in sports is thrown around loosely, but tragically it may feel all too real for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

As the hockey world mourns the tragic loss of Johnny Gaudreau, it's unfortunately not the only tragedy that has befallen Columbus in their history.
Two years ago, the hockey world mourned another loss. This time it was Columbus Blue Jackets netminder Matiss Kivlenieks who tragically passed away after a fireworks accident and passed while trying to protect friends and family. At the home of then goaltending coach Manny Legace, Kievlenieks was celebrating the 4th of July when an errant fireworks display went off and towards a group of people; Kievlenieks was killed when a firework impacted his chest.
Hailed as a hero for his actions, tributes poured out from across the league with many fan made memorials as well as former Blue Jackets teammate Pierre-Luc Dubois changed his number in honour of the late goaltender. Fellow Latvian goaltender Elvis Merzlikins also changed his number for the Latvian National Team, and is forever thankful for Matiss for saving him and his family's lives.
"He saved not just many lives, but when it happened I was standing 20-30 feet back of him," Merzlikins said. "I was hugging my wife. He saved my (unborn) son. He saved my wife and saved me.

"He died as a hero. That's not me saying it, that was the doctor saying it. I just wanted you to know that he was a hero. He saved a lot of lives. And I'm pretty sure he did it with a smile."
Rest In Peace Matiss and Johnny; the hockey world will not be the same without you.
